つい、思わず、うっかり、ふと

僕の日本語の実力が中級レベルだった時、似ている四つの単語に出会った。
「つい、思わず、うっかり、ふと」っていうのはすごく似ているから、今でもよく使い間違える。だから下のアドバイスを聞いたら、もっと覚えやすく、使いやすくなるかもしれない。

つい: 「そのつもりはなかったのに、無意識にしてしまう」という意味
In this sense, the word can mean "by mistake," and it's true it does have that nuance, but I prefer "unintentionally" or "by accident. Person X had no intention of doing Y.

1.面白い本を読んでいると、つい時間を忘れてしまう

思わず: 「するつもりはなかったが、反射的に」という意味
For this one, instead of "without thinking," I prefer to think of it as "reflexively" or "inspite of myself."

1.急にゴキブリが出てきたので、思わず持っていたなべを落としてしまった

うっかり: 不注意でしてしまう
This one is easy: "carelessly." But don't forget, you can use うっかりする to mean "I slipped up."

1.作業中の文書をうっかり消してしまい、大変なことになった

ふと: はっきりした理由もないのに、突然、無意識に
Suddenly, for no apparent reason is the nuance. To occur also works with と思う

1.最近ふと学生時代のことを思い出すことがある
