まさか： Incredible; I never thought~; I never dreamed~; Impossible; Don't tell me that~; Surely not；Come on!; No way!; Get out of here!
This is an adverb that indicated the speaker's strong belief that X is not expected to (have) become a reality.
（１） まさかお母さんの誕生日を忘れたんじゃないだろうね。
Don't tell me you forgot mom's birthday.
（２） A: スミスさんは日本語を一年しか勉強してないのに、流暢に喋れるよ。
B: まさか。
A: Mr. Smith has studied Japanese for only one year, but he can speak fluently.
B: Get out of here!
（３） まさか日本人の女性と結婚するとは思わなかったよ。
I never thought I'd marry a Japanese woman.
（４） 何？！まさか、そんなこと。コンドームだって毎回使ったし！
What?! No, no way. I used a condom every time!

Well just for completeness, I'd be interested in throwing in the Japanese explanation to justify my own rampant delusions that studying the language in L2 can offer insights the anchor in L1 can't...
1.) 文末に「ないだろう」「まい」「はずはない」「わけがない」などの不定表現をしたがって、「そんなことは実際にはおこらない、そんなはずはない」と打ち消す気持ちを表す。また、強い疑いをあらわす。
２.)「まさか。。。とおわなかった」「とは知らなかった」等の表現を従って予期しないことが生じたことに対する驚きの気持ちを表す。話しことばでは （２）のように「まさか」だけで使われることも多い。
３.) まさか+否定表現
可能をあらわす「Ｖれる」の否定形や「ともいえない」「わけにもいかない」等の否定表現を従って 極端な事例を挙げて、実際にはそんなことはできないが話してがそうしたいぐらいの気持ちでいることをあらわす
例: 友達にかわいい娘が紹介されても まさか 持ち帰りしてもらうわけにはいけないし 自分で頑張らなきゃぞ！
４．）緊急の場合、万一の場合」と言う意味。
例：ＡＬＴとして働いてまさかの暇なとき、自殺するほうがいいだろう

Nick, awesome! It's true, learning Japanese in Japanese can certainly offer a lot of insight, can't it. Last summer I digested the entire kanzen masters 2 kyuu grammar book. My Japanese before that was barely passing 3 kyuu. Owing to that, I think I've improved a lot.
